UN to vote on new map showing Africa's true size

A resolution proposing the replacement of the conventional Mercator map with a more accurate depiction of Africa's size is scheduled for a vote by the UN General Assembly on Friday. The current Mercator projection, used since 1569, makes regions near the equator appear smaller and high-latitude areas much larger. Togo, backed by the African Union, is promoting the 2018 Equal Earth design.
