UN chief visits Syria for the first time since 2009 to discuss rebuilding
Antonio Guterres promised United Nations help with the war-torn country's recovery after meeting President Ahmed al-Sharaa on Saturday. Sharaa, who used to run an al-Qaeda affiliate, took power in late 2024 after his rebel alliance finally forced out Bashar al-Assad. The Damascus talks focused on securing foreign aid and looking at strategies to shut down various displacement camps.
