Two young elephant-sized sauropods stood on hind legs 66 million years ago
Digital tests showed two elephant-sized South American sauropods were especially good at standing on their hind legs when young. Scientists used engineering tools to test their thigh bones, finding robust femurs handled forces better than larger species. The upright pose likely helped them reach high leaves, frighten predators, or impress mates about 66 million years ago.
