Storm cuts power to 65000 UK homes
Storm Goretti struck England with winds reaching 99mph, forcing widespread suspension of rail services across Cornwall, Wales and central England. Birmingham Airport closed while West Midlands Railway warned customers not to travel until Friday afternoon. The storm, named by French forecasters as a weather bomb, brought up to 30cm of snow to Wales and the Midlands. Over 65,000 UK homes lost power while France saw 380,000 households without electricity. Network Rail halted all Cornwall trains from Thursday 6pm with no replacement buses due to hazardous conditions.
