Scotland to Receive National Bank Holiday to Mark Historic World Cup Return After 28-Year Drought

First Minister John Swinney has proposed making Monday June 15, 2026 a national bank holiday to celebrate Scotland's first World Cup participation since 1998. The proposal follows Scotland's dramatic 4-2 victory over Denmark that secured qualification for the tournament hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico. Scotland's opening match against Haiti will kick off at 2am GMT on Sunday June 14. The holiday requires royal proclamation approval, with Swinney citing the historic sporting achievement and opportunities for national celebration, business development, and tourism promotion.
