Powerful earthquake strikes southern Japan, thousands evacuated
A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kyushu's Kumamoto region, prompting a tsunami warning that was later lifted, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. Around 40,000 homes lost power, buildings collapsed and roads cracked, with more than 150,000 people evacuated to emergency centres. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi confirmed injuries and said officials were assessing the damage, while nuclear regulators reported no irregularities at nearby plants.
