Physicist wins Nobel Prize for ghost particle telescope at South Pole

Belgian-born physicist Professor Francis Halzen received the Nobel Prize in Physics for his contributions to an observatory detecting neutrinos from space. He spearheaded the establishment of IceCube at the South Pole, which incorporates light sensors within a cubic kilometre volume of Antarctic ice. IceCube helps scientists investigate violent processes from distant galaxies that ordinary telescopes cannot easily see.
