Oxford allows OpenAI to train AI on Bodleian Library texts
The University of Oxford has let the company behind ChatGPT use historical texts from its Bodleian Library to train its AI models. The partnership, announced in March 2025, was initially presented as a way to digitise texts and make them more widely available. Internal documents reveal the material also served to "populate the OpenAI training set", a practice that caused staff concern.
