Many people have experienced illness, including gastroenteritis and eye infections, after swimming at official UK bathing spots. Surfers Against Sewage collected 6,709 individual sickness reports from 514 locations across the UK since 2019, with 1,263 people reporting illness last year. Exmouth Beach recorded the highest number of these reports, totalling 179, followed by Polzeath with 103 cases.
