Essex Police says shoplifting is not unpunished, dismissing a £200 rule
Essex Police states it is actively dealing with shoplifting, with its business crime unit leader Sgt Christian Denning calling claims of no action "a complete fabrication". He dismissed suggestions that thefts under £200 are not investigated, saying the force brought 4,000 charges last year. The number of recorded shoplifting offences in Essex rose to 14,327 by March 2025, with 34% of cases currently solved.
