Oxford Street to go car-free from summer 2026
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has approved plans to ban all vehicles — including buses, taxis, cyclists and private cars — from a stretch of Oxford Street between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street. Construction work is expected to begin in the summer, with the first traffic-free section introduced by the end of 2026. More than 2,700 people responded to a TfL consultation, with a majority supporting the change.
