Democratic socialist Nithya Raman has defeated incumbent Karen Bass to become Los Angeles mayor. Bass conceded after never previously losing a race. Raman, an Indian immigrant and city councillor, campaigned on homelessness, housing and resisting ICE. Bass faced fallout from the 2025 LA fires. America’s two largest cities now have democratic-socialist mayors, with New York’s Zohran Mamdani. The Super Bowl and 2028 Olympics loom.
