The Marius Hills pit, near the moon's equator, measures as much as 150 feet in depth and 300 feet in width. Nasa chose a rover proposal from the Planetary Science Institute, a US non-profit, to look inside it. Geologist Gareth Morgan says it could be a lava tube, which would shield astronauts from radiation and extreme temperatures if Nasa builds a base there.
