In Paris, Lyon, and other cities on Saturday, officers deployed tear gas and water cannons following largely peaceful demonstrations. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said 53 officers were hurt and two protesters were seriously injured, including a 20-year-old in Toulouse who lost several fingers. The government counted 410,000 marchers while unions put the total at about 800,000.
