The SS Richard Montgomery sank in 1944 near Sheerness in Kent, carrying about 1,400 tonnes of explosives. Keir Mather, the maritime minister, told MPs on Monday that all three masts are off, finished early and for an estimated £9.5m. Engineers acted because the masts could have fallen onto the cargo, and the wreck stays under an exclusion zone.
