Khamenei Killing: Iran's New Three-Person Interim Leadership
Ayatollah Alireza Arafi was appointed on Sunday, March 1, as the Guardian Council jurist member of Iran's temporary Leadership Council, following the killing of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Under Article 111 of Iran's constitution, a three-person council assumes all supreme leader duties until a permanent successor is chosen by the Assembly of Experts. Arafi sits alongside President Masoud Pezeshkian and Chief Justice Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei. At 67, Arafi is described as conservative but not radical, and was a trusted confidant of Khamenei.
