India Begins Massive Census with 3 Million Officials in Historic Population Count
India is launching its long-delayed national census, with more than three million officials set to count its 1.4 billion people. The exercise, starting April 1, includes digital self-registration and door-to-door surveys in two phases. It will also collect caste data, a sensitive issue. Delayed by the pandemic, the census is expected to run for a year, with initial results likely after completion in 2027.
