Honduras's ongoing election features both leading presidential candidates promising to sever ties with Beijing and restore diplomatic relations with Taiwan, marking a potential reversal after President Xiomara Castro switched to China in 2023. The shift reflects growing disillusionment with unfulfilled Chinese promises of investment and economic development, with many Hondurans seeing concrete benefits from decades of Taiwanese cooperation in agriculture, healthcare and education. This could make Honduras the first Latin American nation to voluntarily reverse its diplomatic switch from Taiwan to China.
