Green Party Breaks Through With First Directly Elected Mayor

The Green Party won its first ever directly elected mayoralty as Zoe Garbett became Mayor of Hackney, defeating Labour in its long-held stronghold. Party leader Zack Polanski declared "two-party politics is dead and buried." The Greens gained over 180 council seats across England and Wales, with breakthrough wins in Exeter, Salford and Ealing.
