Girl, 4, diagnosed with childhood dementia in Scotland
Sophia Scott was diagnosed with Sanfilippo syndrome just before turning four. Her parents, Darren and Amanda Scott, say it felt like a crime when they learned she likely wouldn't live past 16. The condition, a progressive neurodegenerative disease, has robbed Sophia of her speech and mobility. Campaigners suggest that at least 400 young Scots suffer from childhood dementia, linked to over 100 rare genetic disorders. Most die before 18; 70% do not reach adulthood.
