Federal forces retake Mekelle as Tigray war reignites

Ethiopian federal forces and allied fighters have retaken Mekelle, the capital of Tigray, after the Tigray People's Liberation Front said it temporarily withdrew. Residents and aid workers confirmed government control on Sunday, less than four years after the Pretoria peace deal. The capture revives fears of prolonged fighting and displacement. Ethiopia also closed its embassy in Eritrea and declared ten Eritrean diplomats persona non grata.
