Chicago-Bound British Airways Jet Turns Back After Emergency Over Ireland

British Airways flight BA295, a Boeing 777 from Heathrow to Chicago, declared an emergency over Ireland on Monday after a steep descent from about 37,000 feet to around 9,000 feet. Tracking data showed the crew squawked 7700 and turned back toward Heathrow about an hour after takeoff. British Airways had not publicly confirmed the cause. A later replacement departure was then planned for the evening.
