EU proposes 'buy European' rules for public spending
The European Commission issued proposals on Wednesday to encourage public bodies, such as schools and hospitals, to increase procurement of European-made goods and services. These new rules will make public buyers focus more on quality and environmental sustainability, rather than just the cheapest bid. EU officials estimate public procurement is worth about €2.6tn (£2.2tn) a year.
