UK may pay asylum seekers to leave country
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has announced she is considering a significant increase in payments to failed asylum seekers to encourage voluntary departure from the UK. This forms part of sweeping asylum reforms announced this week including reducing refugee protection from five to 30 months, stricter support conditions, and expanded removal powers. Mahmood argued paying failed asylum seekers to leave is value for money compared to the £30,000 annual cost per person.
