What the AI singularity means
The singularity is a hypothetical future point where AI becomes capable of improving itself faster than humans can follow, setting off runaway growth in intelligence. Machines would rapidly surpass human capability, making the future beyond that moment impossible to predict. Popularised by Vernor Vinge and Ray Kurzweil, it remains a contested idea, with experts split on whether it will ever happen.
