Engine oil adds new air pollutant
People are now exposed to a new airborne silicone pollutant, raising concerns about potential health impacts. Scientists at Utrecht and Groningen Universities discovered that methylsiloxanes, previously believed to dissipate solely from products through evaporation, are additionally expelled by vehicle and ship engines. Originating from engine oil additives, these compounds account for a range between 2 and 4.3 percent of all atmospheric organic aerosols.
