BT to axe 5,000 jobs after broadband losses hit Openreach arm
BT Group is cutting around 5,000 jobs — about 6% of its workforce — as customer numbers fall across its broadband arm, Openreach. The company said it lost 242,000 broadband customers in the second quarter, reflecting fiercer competition and weaker demand. Revenue fell 3% to £9.8 billion in the six months to September 30, while pre-tax profit dropped 11% to £862 million. BT said the reductions form part of wider cost-saving measures worth £3 billion annually.
