Islamabad locked down with three-kilometre red zone around talks venue
Pakistani authorities declared a two-day public holiday in Islamabad and Rawalpindi and established a three-kilometre security zone around the Serena Hotel where the talks are being held. All guests were asked to vacate the hotel to make room for the two delegations. Pakistan's PM Sharif said his government hoped the talks would 'serve as a stepping stone toward durable peace in the region.'
