Cloned Number Plates on UK Roads Hit Record High

Cloned Number Plates on UK Roads Hit Record High

Wikimedia Commons

More than 11,400 drivers contacted the DVLA last year after receiving fines for offences they did not recognise, a record mostly blamed on cloned number plates, according to RAC analysis of official figures. Complaints were 9% higher than in 2024 and almost double the 2018 level. Criminals copy plates from similar cars to dodge cameras, and the RAC says the whole system needs urgent reform.
