China runs air and naval patrols in the disputed South China Sea

The military exercises went ahead on Sunday after Beijing complained about the Philippines working alongside other nations. A spokesperson for China's military, the People's Liberation Army, argued that these combined operations damage peace across the region. The Chinese government claims almost the whole waterway as its own and refuses to accept a 2016 ruling that rejected those rights.
