Carney calls for de-escalation but backs Iran nuclear block

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, speaking in Sydney during an official visit to Australia, called for rapid de-escalation of the Middle East conflict on Wednesday. He said Canada supports efforts to stop Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, though he added the position was taken with regret. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese separately stated his country also backs US action to prevent Iran from acquiring an atomic bomb. Both leaders described Iran's nuclear programme as an ongoing threat.
