Britain's Tallest Bird Returns After 400 Years of Extinction

Britain's tallest bird, the crane, went extinct around 400 years ago due to hunting and wetland loss. In 2025, a record 87 pairs raised 37 young, bringing the total UK population to around 250. The recovery is driven by natural recolonisation from Europe since the late 1970s and conservation efforts to protect and restore wetland habitats.
