Oil giant BP made an underlying profit of $8.46bn in the third quarter, up from $2.2bn a year earlier and well above analysts' forecasts. The company said bigger refining margins and strong gas trading drove the jump, as war in the Middle East disrupted supplies and pushed fuel prices to record highs. Climate campaigners criticised the windfall as households brace for expensive winter energy bills.
