Maternity staff at Basildon Hospital in Essex have received payouts totalling £735,000 after being exposed to dangerous levels of nitrous oxide, the pain-relief gas used in labour. The 121 claimants, including 85 midwives, reported headaches, fatigue and brain fog. Some faced levels up to 30 times the legal limit between 2021 and 2023. The trust has apologised and says the maternity unit is now safe.
