Mahmood proposes 10-year wait for UK settled status.
New UK settlement rules might make high-earning immigrants less inclined to stay long-term, potentially causing labour shortages. A Migration Advisory Committee report, "Who Stays, Who Leaves?", found people earning over £125,000 are the group most likely to depart. The current five-year requirement for settled status would be extended to ten years under a proposal put forth by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood.
