Anthropic explores building its own AI chips to reduce hardware dependency
Anthropic is exploring the possibility of designing its own AI chips as the industry faces a growing shortage of the specialised hardware needed to train and run frontier models. The effort is still in its early stages with no formal project team or plans in place, sources told Reuters. Anthropic currently runs Claude on Amazon Trainium, Google TPUs and Nvidia GPUs, and recently expanded a deal for 3.5 gigawatts of Google TPU capacity expected online in 2027.
