America asks Britain to host talks on reopening the Strait of Hormuz

The vital waterway is currently shut because of the conflict with Iran, increasing pressure on Donald Trump to reopen it. Pete Hegseth, the American defence secretary, phoned Wes Streeting, his new UK equivalent, on Friday to suggest Britain organises the meeting. Hegseth offered to attend the talks himself, although the two governments have not reached a final agreement yet.
