Walters, the Adolescence actor who once rapped as Asher D with So Solid Crew, drew on his own memories of being locked up in 2002. Animol, written by Nick Love, features 15-year-old Troy, portrayed by Tut Nyuot, who is forced to smuggle a phone. Walters says every character's actions come from fear, and he wanted it to feel less grey than other prison films.
