Ministers Acknowledge Sharp Housing Build Increase Needed After Target Shortfall Warnings

Housing Secretary Steve Reed has admitted a sharp surge in housebuilding is needed to meet Labour's 1.5 million homes target by 2029. Housing Minister Matthew Pennycook acknowledged the goal is more difficult than expected in opposition, citing labour shortages and planning delays. The Office for Budget Responsibility projects only 1.3 million homes will be delivered, with new starts falling to pandemic-era lows of 139,000 after Labour took office.
