Antarctica loses 5,000 square miles of ice in 30 years
A recent study has shown Antarctica lost a substantial amount of grounded ice over three decades. Scientists used satellite information to map the continent's shrinking ice, finding a total loss of 12,820 square kilometres. This area is greater than eight times the size of Greater London. Most rapid loss occurred in Western Antarctica, the Arctic Peninsula, and portions of East Antarctica, contributing to rising sea levels, stated lead author Professor Eric Rignot.
