Car industry says electric vehicle discounts are unsustainable
The SMMT stated that electric vehicle incentives costing over £5 billion each year are not viable long-term. New UK car registrations surpassed 2 million, a post-pandemic high. Electric cars achieved 23.4% of the market, aided by manufacturer discounts averaging £11,000. Mike Hawes, SMMT's chief executive, urged a swift reassessment of the Zero Emission Vehicle Mandate. He cited rising energy and material prices as creating difficult economic circumstances, adding that the industry cannot continue this level of financial assistance.
