Burnham confirms run for Parliament as Simons resigns

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham confirmed on Thursday afternoon that he will try to return to Parliament, saying “much bigger change” was needed at a national level. His confirmation came hours after Makerfield MP Josh Simons announced he would resign his seat to allow Burnham to contest the resulting by-election. Burnham would still need approval from Labour’s National Executive Committee, which blocked his attempt to stand in Gorton and Denton earlier this year.
