Spending watchdog to investigate £11bn Lower Thames Crossing
The National Audit Office, the UK's public spending watchdog, plans to investigate the controversial £11 billion Lower Thames Crossing road tunnel. Campaigners have raised concerns about the rising costs of the project, which is anticipated to have a higher per-mile expenditure than the HS2 high-speed rail link. Over £1 billion has already been spent on the project before any building work has even started.
