England found some relief from off-field chaos with a solid first day in their second Test against New Zealand. New captain Joe Root chose to field first, and debutants Sonny Baker and Jacob Bethell both picked up two wickets each. New Zealand finished day one on 291-7, with Glenn Phillips making 49 not out after Tom Blundell scored 51.
