Scientists confirm 160m asteroid hit North Sea, formed 100m wave.
New research settles a long argument about a North Sea seabed feature, helping us understand how impacts shaped Earth. Scientists, led by Dr Uisdean Nicholson, confirmed a 160-metre-wide asteroid struck 700 metres below the North Sea's southern bed. Occurring 43 to 46 million years ago, the event formed the 3km-wide Silverpit Crater and generated a wave over 100 metres tall.
