New Zealand bans puberty blockers for trans youth
From December 19, 2025, New Zealand will prohibit new prescriptions for puberty blockers for transgender youth. A lack of robust data on advantages and disadvantages prompted the decision. Simeon Brown, the Health Minister, stated this cautious stance mirrors restrictions in the UK. The ban will stay until clinical trials conclude in 2031. Existing patients can continue their treatment. Puberty blockers will still be available for other medical needs. Transgender health groups have criticised the move, claiming potential mental health issues.
