US moves to ease UN funding crisis with $3.1bn pledge
US Ambassador Mike Waltz said Washington will soon issue a substantial first payment to help clear mounting UN dues. The United States currently owes $2.19bn to the organisation’s core budget and a further $2.4bn for peacekeeping operations. The move is intended to prevent a severe cash crisis forecast by July. Waltz said President Trump’s $3.1bn funding package backs UN80 reforms, including streamlining overlapping climate bodies, as next year’s budget is cut by 7%.
