Scrapped Projects Leave Government With Billion-Pound Losses

Taxpayers lost billions of pounds last year after government departments abandoned major projects before they were completed. Parliament’s public accounts committee said £6.6bn was written off in 2025, including losses linked to the Rwanda deportation plan and cancelled road schemes. The Ministry of Defence recorded the biggest total, with £1.6bn lost through scrapped projects and retired assets.
