UK: Almost one million young people lack jobs

Almost 946,000 individuals in the UK, aged 16-24, are classified as NEET, official statistics show. This number approaches the high of 987,000 seen earlier this year. Over 60% are economically inactive. The Centre for Social Justice estimates that reducing NEETs by half could boost the Treasury by £23.1 billion over five years. Mental health issues and skills deficits are major causes, the report claims. The government has announced 'Youth Guarantee' schemes, but some charities are advocating for earlier intervention.
