Australia's giant cuttlefish population plummeted 97% to 1,811 this mating season

Only 1,811 giant cuttlefish came to breed on South Australia's Cuttlefish Coast this year, a 97% drop from last year's 63,000. A toxic algal bloom, present for over 18 months, might be responsible for the sharp decline, the state government suggests. Divers found just 440 eggs instead of the usual millions, raising fears for next year's population.
